Retreat for Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices of Nigeria with the National Judicial Institute, Nigeria

A lot of attention is being placed on judicial performance, accountability and efficiency and the Supreme Court and Court of Appeal of Nigeria act as the protector and interpreter of the Constitution.

To facilitate capacity building in the area of the dispensation of justice, AGA-Africa collaborated with the National Judicial Institute on a ‘Retreat for Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices of Nigeria’ that was held on 24th-26th October 2022.

The retreat brought together Supreme Court and Court of Appeal Justices of Nigeria and regional subject matter experts who were Senior Judges from Kenya, Malawi and South Africa.

The workshop was officially opened and moderated by Ebelechukwu Enedah, AGA-Africa Country Coordinator for Nigeria. Opening remarks were made by Markus Green, AGA-Africa Board Member, who thanked the judges present, for their dedication and commitment to safeguarding the rule of law. Chukukere Unamba-Oparah, Programme Director and Country Coordinator for Kenya and Hon. Justice Salisu Gabar Abdullahi, Administrator, National Judicial Institute also gave opening remarks.

Goodwill messages were made by Hon. Justice Raphael Agbo, Justice, Court of Appeal of Nigeria on behalf of Hon. Justice Monica Mensen, President, Court of Appeal of Nigeria.

His Excellency Moses Ekpo, Deputy Governor, Akwa Ibom State also made opening remarks on behalf of His Excellency Udom Emmanuel, Governor, Akwa Ibom State.

At the opening, a keynote address was made by Hon. Justice John Oporo, Justice, Supreme Court of Nigeria on behalf of His Lordship, Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, Chief Justice of Nigeria.

The highly engaging sessions facilitated by Justice Chima Nweze, Justice of the Supreme Court of Nigeria, Justice William Ouko, Judge, Supreme Court of Kenya, Justice John Katsala, Justice, Supreme Court of Appeal of Malawi, Justice Boissie Henry Mbha, Judge, Supreme Court of Appeal of South Africa and Dr. Anthony Idigbe SAN, Senior Partner, PUNUKA Attorneys & Solicitors.

Closing remarks were made by Hon. Justice John Oporo, Justice, Supreme Court of Nigeria.

The workshop was brought to a close by Ebelechukwu Enedah, AGA-Africa Country Coordinator for Nigeria on behalf of Markus Green, AGA-Africa Board Member, who thanked all the participants for attending virtually and in person.
