‘Strengthening Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts-Investigation and Prosecution’ Workshop with the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP), Nigeria

A form of modern-day slavery, Human Trafficking manifests itself in different ways both overt and covert. Human Trafficking has devastating implications for victims and also undermines national and transnational security.

Lending its support to efforts towards its eradication, the AGA-Africa Programme collaborated with the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons (NAPTIP) on a highly engaging ‘Strengthening Anti-Human Trafficking Efforts-Investigation and Prosecution’ workshop held on 15th-19th May, 2023, in Nassarawa, Nigeria.

The workshop brought together officers from the National Agency for Prohibition of Trafficking In Persons, national subject matter experts from Nigeria, as well as regional and international subject matter experts from Kenya and the United States.

The workshop was aimed at equipping the participants with the necessary strategies and tools needed in the investigation and prosecution of human trafficking cases in Nigeria.

Ebelechukwu Enedah, AGA-Africa Programme Country Coordinator for Nigeria kicked off the workshop as John Edozie, International Advisor, AGA-Africa Programme, gave opening remarks.

Professor Fatima Waziri-Azi, Director General, National Agency of the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons delivered the keynote address.

The sessions were facilitated by Kyle George, First Assistant Attorney General for the State of Nevada, Olufemi Fatunde, Consultant, British Council on the Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption Component, AIG Christopher Owolabi (Rtd), Retired Police Officer, Erherhebue Emumejakpor LLB, Solicitor and Advocate of the Supreme Court of Nigeria and Anita Nyajong, Advocate, High Court of Kenya.

At the closing, Ebelechukwu Enedah thanked the participants for their attendance and participation.

Workshop Outcomes

Through this workshop the participants:

  1. Enhanced their knowledge and skills on the effective measures for the prevention and eradication of trafficking in persons and other related offences.
  2. Were equipped with the necessary tools and skills needed in joint case handling across investigation and prosecution processes, in order to provide impactful testimonies during criminal trials.
  3. Enhanced their understanding in identifying statutory elements of human trafficking offences, evidence mapping and drafting of charges.
