AGA-Africa Programme Director and Country Coordinator for Kenya, Chukukere Unamba-Oprah, and Maame Hagaan, AGA-Africa Programme Country Coordinator for Ghana represented the Programme’s leadership at the Commonwealth Secretariat Symposium for Judges on Cybercrime and Electronic Evidence on 25th-27th October, 2023, where distinguished delegates converged at the La Palm Royal Beach Hotel in Accra, Ghana.

The symposium was organized by the Commonwealth Secretariat in collaboration with the Judicial Training Institute of Ghana.

The three-day symposium brought together judicial officials providing a platform for them to enhance their knowledge and capacity to adjudicate over cases involving cybercrime and electronic evidence, as well as enhance their knowledge of domestic and treaty cybercrime and frameworks and comparative jurisprudence.

The AGA-Africa Programme brought in Hon. Justice Diana Mochache Judge, High Court of Kenya as a subject matter expert. Hon. Justice Diana Mochache facilitated a session on: ‘Electronic Evidence and Mutual Legal Assistance Schemes.’

The symposium also brought together judicial officials from Ghana and regional subject matter experts from Kenya, Pakistan and Nigeria.

The symposium was officially opened by Professor Luis Franceschi, Assistant Secretary General Commonwealth Secretariat who spoke virtually. Hon. Justice Alhaji, Justice, High Court of Ghana Hon. Justice Amadu Tanko, Director, Judicial Training Institute Ghana and Maame Hagan, AGA-Africa Programme County Coordinator for Ghana also made opening remarks.  

Hon. Lady Justice Gertrude Torkonoo, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana delivered the keynote address.

Other guest speakers were Her Ladyship Justice Afia Serwah Asare-Botwe, Justice, Court of Appeal, Ghana, Zahid Jamil, Leading Consultant, Council of Europe Convention on Cybercrime, Terlumun George-Maria Tyendezwa, Deputy Director Legal Services, Federal Ministry of Justice, Nigeria and Dr. Bright Gameli Mawudor, Founder, Africahackon.

AGA-Africa Programme Director and Country Coordinator for Kenya, Chukukere Unamba-Oparah spoke at the closing ceremony, giving a summary of the Programmes’ scope and mandate.
