‘Crypto Assets and Emerging Trends’ Webinar with the Financial Intelligence Centre South Africa

Financial innovations such as crypto assets create new methods of transmitting value over the Internet.  Their distinct features also create new opportunities for money launderers, terrorist financiers, and other criminals to launder their proceeds or finance their illicit activities.

To address these emerging trends, AGA-Africa in collaboration with the Financial Intelligence Centre, South Africa and the Eastern and Southern Africa Anti-Money Laundering Group-ESAAMLG held a two-day webinar themed “Crypto Assets and Emerging Trends on 4th -5th May, 2021 in South Africa.

The two-day webinar was tailored towards understanding the trails created when value moves through the use of crypto assets, the tools available to law enforcement as well as enhancing an understanding of the value of other digital information such as open-source intelligence to law enforcers across Africa.

The webinar was graced by Thomas J. Donovan Jr., Attorney General of Vermont, US and Adv. Ouma Rabaji-Rasethaba, Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, South Africa and officially opened by Markus Green, AGA-Africa Board Member and Kim Robinson, AGA-Africa Country Coordinator for South Africa. The webinar was ably moderated by Rayner Mugyezi, Lawyer, Kampala Associated Advocates and Pieter Smit, Executive Manager, Financial Intelligence Centre.

The facilitators were Beaunard Grobler, Open-Source Information Specialist, Financial Intelligence Centre of South Africa, David J. Thelander, Board Member, Distributed Ledger Governance Association, Vermont, US, J.C. Boggs, Partner, King & Spalding, Washington DC, US, Katherine Kirkpatrick , Partner, King & Spalding, Chicago, Illinois, US, Michael Brian , Partner, King & Spalding, Los Angeles, California, US and Herco Steyn Senior Fintech Specialist, South African Reserve Bank.

 

The 2-days of robust conversations were brought to close by Adv. Ouma Rabaji-Rasethaba, Deputy National Director of Public Prosecutions, South Africa and Thomas J. Donovan Jr., Attorney General of Vermont, US.
