AGA-Africa Programme Director and Country Coordinator for Kenya, Chukukere Unamba-Oprah, represented the Programme’s leadership at the Law Society of Kenya Annual Conference on 15th-19th August, 2023, where distinguished delegates converged at the Diamond Leisure Beach & Golf Resort, Diani, Kenya.

The AGA-Africa Programme were the golden sponsors for the five-day conference themed ‘Climate Change: From Theory to Action, The Role of the Legal Profession in Climate Justice’ and sub themed ‘Anti-Money Laundering: The Uncomfortable Agent, A Lawyer’s Role in Balancing the Competing Interests’.

The symposium brought together delegates from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), Habitat for Humanity, Federation of Women Lawyers Kenya (FIDA), Kenya Judiciary Academy (KJA), Law Society of Kenya (LSK), Ministry of Environment, Climate Change & Forestry on Policy and Strategy, the National Assembly of Kenya, East African Breweries (EABL), Nuclear Power and Energy Agency, Embassy of the United States of America, Financial Reporting Centre (FRC), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Ministry of Treasury, British High Commission (BHC), Kenya Green Building Society (KGBS), Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kingsley Napley LLP., Kenyatta University (KU), Anti-Illicit Trade & Trade BAT East & Southern African, Ford Foundation and the Ministry of Public Service, Gender & Affirmative Action.

The symposium was officially opened by Eric Theuri, President, Law Society of Kenya and H.E Hon. Fatuma Achani, Governor, Kwale County who delivered the keynote address.

Mary Ng’ang’a, AGA-Africa Programme Communications and Administrative Officer, spoke on behalf of Chukukere Unamba-Oparah, AGA-Africa Programme Director and Country Coordinator for Kenya, emphasizing on the role of policy players in anti-money laundering by upholding financial integrity, the rule of law and individual rights.

The AGA-Africa Programme brought in Mercy Buku, AML/CFT Risk Management Consultant, Banking and Digital Financial Services Sector as a subject matter expert. Mercy  took part in the panel discussions on: ‘Emerging Trends in ESG, Compliance Technology Perspectives from Public Sector & Private Sector’ and ‘Anti-Money Laundering: The Uncomfortable Agent, A Lawyer’s Role in Balancing the Competing Interests’.

Other distinguished guest speakers were Hon. Gladys Boss Sholei, Deputy Speaker, National Assembly, Hon. Aisha Jumwa, Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Public Service, Gender & Affirmative Action, Gal Levin, Countering Illicit Finance Advisor, British High Commission, Hon. Hon. Mohammed Faki, Senator, Mombasa County, delivered the closing remarks bringing the conference to a close.
