AGA-Africa Programme’s Country Coordinator for Malawi, Gift Chikwakwa, represented the Programme’s leadership at the Malawi Bench-Bar Symposium themed: Towards an Improved Justice Delivery System on 20th October, 2023, where senior counsel currently practicing at the Malawi Bar converged at the Bingu International Conference Center, Lilongwe, Malawi.

The symposium, sponsored by the AGA-Africa Programme, was organized by the Malawi Law Society (MLS), the Malawi Institute of Legal Education (MILE) and the Malawi Judiciary.

The single day symposium provided a platform for the participants to have deliberations and share experience-based reflections on the working of and public perceptions over the judiciary and the role of the legal profession in sustaining an effective justice administration and delivery in order to sustainably meet the public expectation of how the justice system must serve the nation of Malawi.  

The symposium was officially opened by Patrick Mpaka, President, Malawi Law Society as Hon. Thabo Nyirenda, Attorney General of Malawi made opening remarks.  Gift Chikwakwa also spoke, giving an overview of the AGA-Africa Programme’s scope and mandate.

His Lordship Hon. Justice Rizine Mzikamanda SC, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Malawi delivered the keynote address.

Other speakers were Edge Fidells Kanyongolo, Associate Professor (Emeritus), University of Malawi, Modecai Msisha SC, Managing Partner, Nyirenda and Msisha, Justice Ivy Kamanga, Justice of Appeal, Supreme Court of Appeal of Malawi and Justice Dr. Chifundo Kachale, Justice, High Court of Malawi.

At the closing, Patrick Mpaka, President, Malawi Law Society, gave brief remarks bringing the symposium to a close.
