Developing a Robust Anti-Corruption and Anti-Money Laundering Landscape in Nigeria” workshop with the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies

Nigeria has been in the news lately on account of the large-scale theft of its oil resources and its inability to meet its production quota as stipulated by the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC). The government and relevant agencies can tackle this problem in order to yield meaningful results.

To facilitate capacity building in the area of Anti-Corruption and Anti-Money Laundering, AGA-Africa Programme collaborated with the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) on a highly engaging workshop held on 15th-16th February 2023.    

The workshop brought together participants comprising students from the Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Government Officials, Law Enforcement Agents, Lawyers, Judicial Officers, Bankers, as well as local, regional and international subject matter experts from Nigeria, Malawi and the United States.

The workshop’s objective was to provide a platform for the participants to increase awareness and capacity building of Law Enforcement Officers, Finance Officers, Prosecutors, Lawyers, Civil Servants and Judicial Officers to identify, execute and implement anti-corruption and anti-money laundering policies and strategies that will enhance cooperation in the fight against corruption in Nigeria.

At the opening, Ebelechukwu Enedah, AGA-Africa Programme Country Coordinator for Nigeria spoke on behalf of Markus Green, Board Member, AGA-Africa Programme. Professor Animi Awah, Associate Research Professor, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS) delivered the keynote address on behalf of Professor Muhammed Tawfiq Ladan, Director General, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies.

The highly engaging sessions were moderated by Ebelechukwu Enedah, AGA-Africa Programme Country Coordinator for Nigeria and facilitated by Dr. Esa Onoja, Chief of Staff to the Chairman, Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Todd Tumbleson, Task Force Officer and Criminal Investigator II, Southern Nevada Human Trafficking Task Force, Professor Dayo Ayoade, Professor of Energy and Natural Resources Law, University of Lagos, Dr. Jean Phillipo-Priminta, Director General, Financial Intelligence Authority, Malawi, Dr. Olajide Bello, Associate Professor at the Department of Public Law, University of Lagos, Dr. Ibe Ifaekadu, Deputy Lead, Nigerian Institute of Advanced Legal Studies (NIALS), Mac Atom, Manager, Access Bank PLC, Mike Igini, Former State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Akwa Ibom State and Dr. Anthony Idigbe SAN, Senior Partner, PUNUKA Attorneys & Solicitors.

Ebelechukwu Enedah, AGA-Africa Programme Country Coordinator for Nigeria gave closing remarks and thanked all the participants for attending virtually and in person.

 

Workshop Outcomes

Through this workshop the participants:

  1. Were acquainted with the current global trends in the enforcement of anti-corruption and anti-money laundering regulations.
  2. Equipped themselves with the necessary tools and skills needed in the effective prosecution of cases concerning corruption and money laundering.
  3. Enhanced their understanding on policies and strategies that can be used to strengthen cooperation in the fight against corruption.
